The Art of Growing and Showing Achillea.

Achillea. The most generally used for the Hardy Border is Achillia Ptarmica the pearl (reselected).
It grows about 2 to 3 feet in height, and in July freely bears its medium, double, white flowers that are attractive in the Hardy Border and wonderful for cutting for indoor decoration.

Achillea Hardy Garden Perennials are the best for the flower border; the taller kinds are excellent for the hardy herbaceous border where they should be planted in the autumn, or early spring.

Best soil for planting is a well drained fairly open ordinary soil, if you do not possess this type of soil, and your gardening on heavy clay, as with all flowerbeds, to get the best results the incorporation of well-rotted garden compost is always beneficial for good root and flower production, we have an article on compost making at :->

The incorporation of well-rotted garden compost is a must if your garden soil is of the heavy clay type. Also leaf mould is also very good as a mulch in the winter months, leaf mould will take up to 18 months to breakdown. Sand or sharp grit is also good for opening the soil.

The Achillea Hardy Garden Perennials spread quickly and are easily propagated by root cuttings.

The Achillea Hardy Garden Perennial plants are of loose habit of growth and the stems must be fully supported in the early spring.

The best variety we have grown in recent years is Achillea Hardy Garden Perennial ‘ptarmica’. Rightly described as being one of the best white Achilleas ever bred. The Achillea ‘ptarmica’ sneezewort variety must be grown with care once it is introduced into the herbaceous garden border because on account that it is classed as a creeping rootstock. The roots run freely beneath the soil making it difficult to work amongst the plants, and they will interfere with neighbouring plants.

The plants of the Achillea Hardy Garden Perennial ‘ptarmica’ remain in flower in the border for well over 12 weeks, when cut the blooms are long lasting in water, and can also be dried and kept for home floral display for years.
